Heat Pumps

A heat pump that maintains a temperature-controlled space can provide either heating or cooling, depending upon whether the environment is cooler or warmer than the conditioned space. Even when a heat pump is used for heating, it still uses the same basic refrigeration-type cycle to do the job (merely changing operation so that the warm end of the device is inside the conditioned space, heating it). When used in heating, heat pumps draw heat from the air or from the ground.

Gas Furnaces

When it comes to fuel efficiency, experts say nothing beats a gas condensing furnace, which has annual fuel-utilization efficiency (AFUE) of at least 90 percent. Compared with an 80 percent AFUE furnace, a condensing furnace might save you $8 or so for every $100 you spend on heating.

Boilers

Since boiler and radiator heating systems are typically found in older homes, boiler installation is often a replacement task rather than a task performed during new home construction. Despite the popularity of other heating units in new structures, one thing that no one can deny about boiler and radiator heating systems is that they are extremely durable. Though boiler installation is less common than furnace installation, those who have the former are rarely in any hurry to switch to the latter. Boiler and radiator heating systems are much more expensive to set up than furnace and forced-air systems, but the comfortable, moist heat boiler and radiator systems produce is something many find preferable to the dry heat created by forced-air systems.

Geothermal Systems

Even in regions without large high temperature geothermal resources, a geothermal heat pump can still provide space heating and air conditioning. Like a refrigerator or air conditioner, these systems use a heat pump to force the transfer of heat from the ground to the application.
